MOD Contemporary Dance Movement

MOD is a creative student dance company encompassing high-level dancers who are given the opportunity for high-level choreography, rehearsals, and performances, with no intervention from outside teachers/choreographers.

The Club maintains advanced performance work and gives numerous developed dancers who attend the University a chance to explore their own creativity through the creation and choreography of their own individual pieces for a year-end show.

MOD Contemporary Dance Movement was founded in 2010 by Elli Hansen. Our members come together from different faculties and years of study to create an advanced-level student run dance company. MOD provides a space for dancers to continue their training during their post secondary studies. While focusing primarily on contemporary dance, other styles are also touched on. These include, but are not limited to: jazz, modern, tap, and ballet. The company allows the chance for dancers to choreograph pieces, teach combos and perform at the year end showcase, as well as other events in the community.

Yearly traditions for the company include professional video and photoshoots, bonding nights, guest performances, Christmas brunches and more. The year starts in September with our annual auditions to find our company, which usually ranges from 30-35 members. Time commitment includes rehearsals every Sunday, with a 2 hour mandatory rehearsal for technique training and choreography of our opening and closing numbers.

Our club goals help build the foundation of our company, we strive to work towards these goals each season. They include:

  • To create a strong, lasting connection between the UofA and the Edmonton Arts Community.
  • To integrate student groups and resources to provide a unique opportunity for UofA students.
  • To operate outside of classical repertories, with a changing style to match changing generations.
  • To encourage members to explore other styles of dance, with the main emphasis continuing to be on contemporary dance.

MOD also encourages dancers who may not be able to commit to the time requirement to attend our open classes that we offer throughout the year. These can be an excellent opportunity to test out the level of dance that we practice, a chance to move your body and a place to meet a new group of people.

MOD is your chance to find your dance family at the UofA. We encourage you to check out our Instagram, Youtube and Facebook pages for more information about our company or to watch videos of our previous showcases and video shoots!
