Figure Skating Club

The Club offers great opportunities to socialize with other Club members off the ice and awards prizes to members for attending Club practices.

The University of Alberta Figure Skating Club is a student-lead organization which allows skaters to continue their passion for the sport of figure skating. Our club had over 60 members of various skating levels in the 2023-24 school year. We offer regular ice times throughout the week, our focus is practice, rather than instruction, we do not have coaches within the club. Our mission is to create a welcoming environment for skaters to meet other students, continue to skate, and create a community within our campus.

The UAFSC requires a minimum skating level to be completed. As per Skate Canada guidelines, StarSkate Star 1 tests (or equivalent such as Preliminary or Junior Bronze test) must be completed in order to register. Although we do not require proof, these tests have to be completed as a safety precaution as we have varying levels of skaters. If you skated with an organization outside of SkateCanada, please check the SkateCanada website to self assess which level you would be at. If you are uncertain about the pace of the practice sessions, we often recommend observing one to see if you would be suitable for the sessions or if you would be comfortable on the ice. We are not a learn-to-skate program, you must have more than a basic understanding of figure skating to join our club.

We offer edge classes, stroking classes, fun social media videos you can participate in, group activities such as our night out at the Bears Hockey game or Sip and Skate!

The UAFSC encourages club members to consistently come to practice and club events by offering practice points. For each practice you attend, you earn one point! These points are added up at the end of the year and you can earn fun prizes like club merch or Lululemon!

In 2022, we hosted our first showcase! Since then, it has become an annual event. Participation in our show is optional, although it is a fun activity to showcase your skating skills to your family, friends and other students. Our showcases consist of group numbers, solos, duets, guest skaters and more! These are choreographed by club members and is funded by our fundraisers throughout the year. At our 2024 showcase, “2000s Rewind”, we had a record audience of over 250 people! If you are interested in participating, be sure to send us an email or talk to one of our executive members.

To register with our club, you will need to go to the University of Alberta’s ActivityReg website. Important: you cannot skate without being registered on ActivityReg! This fee must be paid before your first session. Once your ActivityReg fee has been paid, you can e-transfer your club registration fee to crfigure@ualberta.ca. For students, this fee is $30/semester or $50/year. For non-students, this fee is $38/semester or $63/year and non-students must also purchase a VVC membership.
