For Host Supervisors
The aim of the RWTH Aachen-UAlberta Junior Fellowship is to provide opportunities for students from RWTH Aachen, demonstrating excellent academic performance, to conduct research as part of the Master's or doctoral thesis (including research internships). This research should have strategic value for the partnership between University of Alberta and RWTH Aachen. More information about the UAlberta-RWTH Aachen partnership is available here. The application process for the RWTH Aachen funding is outlined here
Host Supervisor Responsibilities
In order to facilitate the candidate’s application to RWTH Aachen for funding, UAlberta host supervisors are requested to provide a letter confirming willingness to host the candidate that references the research project as well as details on the expected outcome and/or prospective cooperation in the future.
Once the participant has arrived on campus, host supervisors are asked to provide access to appropriate research facilities and to act as a mentor for the duration of the participant’s stay.
Responsibilities of the University of Alberta International (UAI)
The University of Alberta International is responsible for overseeing this program and will guide and directly assist the host professor and the RWTH Aachen Junior Fellowship candidate through the invitation and immigration application process.
UAI will submit the Foreign Visitor Category Assessment for any research interns as necessary.
Candidates will normally be formally invited to the University of Alberta, and must obtain the proper immigration documents. This is dependent on a few factors, the primary one being the length of stay as a researcher.
Stays of less than 120 calendar days:
- Global Skills Strategy Short-term (120 Day) Work Permit Exemption for Researchers and must obtain a visitor visa and/or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
Stays of more than 120 calendar days:
- Research Award Recipients must obtain a work permit along with potential visitor visa and/or eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization)
The appropriate student category for invitation will be determined and confirmed with all parties after nomination/application on an ad-hoc basis, as it can depend on individual factors as well.
Candidate's research may commence at any time of year and can be for a duration of 3-9 months, depending on the availability of both parties during that period, funding, etc.
Additional funding of $6000 may be available through the University of Alberta Research Experience (UARE). UARE funding requires a $2000 contribution from the host professor. Applicants will be considered for this funding when they indicate their interest to the University of Alberta International via the RWTH Aachen - University of Alberta Junior Research Fellowships Participant Questionnaire. It will be contingent upon the host supervisor’s agreement to contribute $2000.
UAlberta faculty are welcome to contact the International Internship Coordinator (Inbound) at intern@ualberta.ca with any questions or for more information.
