Using Artificial Intelligence at the U of A
The University of Alberta acknowledges the potential Artificial Intelligence (AI) has to enhance learning, teaching, research, administration, and the other work we do at the U of A.
AI tools have the potential to improve efficiency and enrich experiences in teaching, research, student life, and administration. However, these tools should be used with careful evaluation of their risks and alignment with core commitments as outlined in the university’s strategic plans. AI systems often have limitations, including built-in biases and exclusion of certain types of knowledge.
The University of Alberta is committed to the ethical and responsible use of AI. To this end, senior leadership and campus partners have committed to exploring the variety of AI usage and its ramifications for U of A faculty, staff and students.
Draft Framework for Responsible and Ethical Use of AI at the University of Alberta
As U of A leadership continues to determine its responsibilities regarding AI, it has drafted a Framework for Responsible & Ethical Use of AI at the U of A to set down guiding principles and accountability processes to ensure the university meets its legal and moral obligations within this sphere. Engaging with these tools must align with our broader commitment to delivering innovative and impactful learning experiences, as well as promoting equity, diversity, inclusion, sustainability, and reconciliation, as outlined in U of A strategies and policies. Feedback on this draft is welcome and can be submitted to aiguide@ualberta.ca prior to January 20, 2025.

Provost’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and the Learning Environment
The Provost’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence and the Learning Environment at the U of A met from February to June 2023 to discuss the impact of AI on the educational ecosystem. They engaged with various stakeholders across the university to address topics such as ethical implications, privacy concerns, academic integrity, and the changing nature of assessments. Based on its conclusions, a broader set of committees has been established to continue this work.
U of A Steering Committee on AI
Established to provide strategic oversight, direction, and guidance for the integration of Artificial Intelligence across teaching and learning, research, and operations, the Steering Committee will ensure that AI initiatives align with the U of A’s strategic goals, uphold ethical standards, and foster innovation and adaptability in an increasingly AI-driven world. The committee will report to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and the President’s Executive Committee (Operational) to provide regular updates on progress, challenges, and achievements to ensure transparency and accountability.
