Memorial + Tribute Giving

A memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to remember a loved one, and can even create a legacy centred around their goals or values. This gift can support students, research or another area of the university.

Tributes mark special occasions at any stage of life: graduations, birthdays, weddings, anniversaries or retirement.

When you make a memorial or tribute gift*, the university notifies the next of kin on file or the honouree of your gift. With your permission, we will share your name and address but not reveal the dollar amount of the donation.

Creating a named annually funded memorial award is one way you can choose to honour the memory of a loved one by pooling donations made in their memory to support students for five years. It's not always easy to figure out all the details around a memorial award when grieving the loss of a loved one, and we are here to assist you if you choose to go in this direction. Contact us to discuss further.

*Memorial and tribute gifts are accepted in accordance with the University of Alberta’s Donation Acceptance Policy.

My wife, Elnaz, was among the 176 people killed when Flight PS752 was shot down by Iranian missiles. Elnaz was a keen advocate of educational advancement and very sensitive about prejudice and tyranny, and she is the reason this scholarship was created. She would be happy to keep the memory of all victims of Flight PS752 alive, in honour of women, life and freedom.

Gifts in lieu and acknowledgements

In lieu of gifts or flowers, you may wish for others to support the University of Alberta to remember a loved one or celebrate a milestone. We would be honoured to help you by providing an online giving option, personalized donation forms, or suggested wording for your announcement.

When a memorial or tribute gift is made, the university will notify the next of kin or honouree by sending them an acknowledgment letter with a list of donor names and addresses. Please note that we will only share donor information if consent is provided and donation amounts will not be revealed.
