ACADEMIC MODEL PROVIDING ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE (AMPATH)

  • AMPATH is a partnership between Moi University, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, North American universities led by Indiana University, and the Kenyan Government. 
  • The OGS has been in partnership with AMPATH since 2018, but has had ties to the group with work from ICChange. The OGS mainly has worked with AMPATH focusing on surgery and trauma.
  • Major past initiatives: 
    • Plastic needs assessment
      • Detailed assessment of infrastructure, workflow, supplies, and equipment available at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital and rural care centers
    • ATLS training program
      • ATLS certification courses provided for local healthcare professionals through the collaboration of the Kenya Red Cross Society, the Surgical Society of Kenya, and the Trauma Association of Kenya


ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDING

  • Kenya Trauma and Injury Program
    • Collection of a national prospective trauma database; determining the affect of the ATLS training on trauma
  • Uganda Trauma and Injury Program
    • In an effort to understand a better triaging system within Mbarara, a trauma database was created
  • These projects will culminate towards the GIVES initiative which you can see here


BETHUNE ROUND TABLE (BRT)

  • The Bethune Roundtable (BRT) is an interdisciplinary meeting hosted at a Canadian academic centre to discuss challenges and solutions to improving surgical care to underserved communities. The objective of BRT is to bring together health professionals from across disciplines to share their experiences in delivering safe surgery, anesthesia and obstetric care in low-resource settings.

ICCHANGE

  • Innovative Canadians for Change (ICChange) is a not for profit organization based in Alberta which engages in global development projects, specifically targettng populations after identifying the specific needs in the communities.
  • The OGS and ICChange collaborate whever there is an overlap in surgery and innovation and entrepreneruship.
