Surgical Simulation Program
Our surgical simulation program is one of the few in the country that is accredited by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. We are the only university in Canada to offer trainee surgeons the opportunity to apply innovative surgical techniques being developed by our research teams who are global leaders in surgical research. We have two world-class research institutes – The Ray Rajotte Surgical Medical Research Institute and the Surgical Simulation Research Laboratory – and are one of the few universities where full teams train together: nurses, surgeons and anesthetists. Mission
The Department of Surgery Surgical Simulation Program (DSSSP) improves patient care by training healthcare professionals in a harm-free but effective learning environment, to maximize skill acquisitions and transfer them to clinical service, using state-of-the-art equipment and cutting edge innovation and research.
What We Offer
The DSSSP is an integrated hub supporting surgical education, research and fellowships. We have combined four teaching units within the Department of Surgery: RRSMRI, CASES, Anatomy Teaching Lab, and SSRL. The DSSSP actively services surgical education supporting course development, simulation design, and education assessment. We work closely with program directors in the Department to understand their needs in developing training courses and supporting courses. Surgical trainees at different levels practice surgical skills at appropriate levels. Collaborating with scientists and educators the DSSSP supports residents and graduates in their research and innovation in the field of surgical education and simulation development. We encourage them to challenge their skill development by practice and problem solving. The DSSSP supports residents in pursuing higher education goals, including MSc degrees in Surgical Education.
