Volunteer Training

All volunteers receive training and orientation to ensure you feel prepared for your first shift at The Steadward Centre! Depending on the program area you will be working in, you may be directed to the following training sessions.

General Volunteer Orientation

An introductory, online module that will prepare you for working with participants in a fitness setting. This module takes about 60 to 90 minutes to work through asynchronously and covers the following topics:

  • an overview of The Steadward Centre (TSC)
  • specific details for volunteering at TSC
  • expectations for volunteers
  • safety
  • volunteer scope of practice
  • volunteer code of conduct
  • contraindications to exercise

Program-Specific Orientation

Prior to starting your volunteer experience, volunteers will be contacted to attend a program-specific orientation session. The primary goals of this session are to:

  1. Meet the program instructor and other volunteers in the program
  2. Learn specific expectations for you from the program instructor
  3. Familiarize yourself with the space, equipment and specific participant programs (when applicable)
  • Note: Due to scheduling challenges, FES volunteers will receive their program-specific training through a combination of an online training course and a training checklist during their FES shifts.

FES Volunteer Orientation

Prior to starting your FES volunteer experience, you will go through an online training course to begin to familiarize yourself with FES.  This will be supplemented during your first 1-2 shifts with an in-person training checklist the floor monitors will guide you through.
