Program Description
CARRE is involved in the development of better methods for training walking after injury to the nervous system. We are currently working with individuals with spinal cord injury and children affected by perinatal stroke.
ReWalk Exoskeleton Study
Exoskeletons are suits with motors that power the knee and hip movement in order to assist individuals with severe neurological impairment or limited leg strength to walk. We are examining how the ReWalk system can help individuals with spinal cord injury and who will be most likely to benefit from this type of training.
Participants train with the exoskeleton for an hour and a half a day, 5 days a week for 12 weeks. They are tested for walking ability, reflexes, balance, endurance and the strength of brain signals to their leg muscles.
Please contact us if you are interested in participating in the study!
Motor Training in Children with Early Brain Injury
We want to know if intensive, motor training-started at a very early age-is beneficial in improving leg function in children who have had early brain injury, such as perinatal stroke. Further, we are examining if pathways from the damaged side of the brain can be strengthened by training.
Training consists of a variety of activities that encourage children to use their weaker limb such as jumping, climbing stairs and kicking a ball. Children will participate in training 1 hour per day, 4 days per week, for 3 months.
