Mothers with Intellectual Disabilities
Mothers with Intellectual Disabilities from Different Cultural Communities: A Narrative Study
The aim of this study was to dedicate attention to the voices of mothers with intellectual disabilities from minority cultures in Canada by using narrative inquiry. A purposive sample of mothers with intellectual disabilities from different cultural communities in Quebec and Alberta, Canada were recruited. One objective was to uncover the life stories of mothers with intellectual disabilities from different ethno-cultural communities. Another objective, was to explore the meanings they ascribe to motherhood, and how their experience is impacted by 'critical incidents' and by their interweaving identities; gender, disability and culture. This study provides further insight into the relationships between individuals (family, upbringing) and wider social constructs.
