Course Goals
- To increase understanding of the theory and application of rehabilitation in children with selected conditions.
- To familiarize the learner with selected technologies used in pediatric rehabilitation, such as for emotional regulation, gait analysis and training, augmentative and alternative communication, and seated mobility.
Course learning objectives
After this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss strategies rehabilitation professionals can use to help a child’s emotional regulation.
- Identify effective strategies to communicate effectively with clients/caregivers according to their individual needs.
- Describe the evidence for using select technologies in pediatric gait training interventions.
- Create appropriate wheelchair and seating goals, and understand factors that affect wheelchair propulsion and functional performance.
- Consider the role of different allied health professionals in pediatric rehabilitation.
COURSE HOURS
The course is approximately 1 credit equivalent (13 content hours). However, you should expect to spend somewhere between 18-35 total hours on the course (varies depending on the individual). We do equate the course on the high end of that and 35 educational hours appear on the digital certificates that are issued after course completion.
Course facilitator
Jen Glumpak - PT, MScPT (she/her)
Jen is a 2009 graduate of the University of Alberta MScPT program. Her clinical work includes pediatrics and wheelchair seating at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and work as an early intervention therapist with the AHS Pediatric Community Rehabilitation Team. Jen worked for several years as the Physiotherapy Technical Consultant at the Edmonton site for the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators’ Physiotherapy Competency Clinical Exam. She has assisted as an assessor for Dr. Jaynie Yang’s research examining motor training in children with early brain injury since 2016. Jen enjoys mentoring students and has been an Instructor for diploma-level healthcare students at NorQuest College since 2013. Her most recent passion is empowering clinicians and patients to access evidence-based care for low back pain with her role in Dr. Greg Kawchuk’s lab as the program manager for the Alberta Back Care Pathway and GLA:D Back.

A 100% refund of the $250 course fee is available to students who withdraw before the first day of the course. Withdrawal requests during the first 3 weeks of the course will be refunded 50% of the registration fee. After 3 weeks (mid-point of the course) no refund will be provided.
The course content is delivered 100% asynchronously meaning there is no requirement to be online at a specific class date and time. Participants can complete the learning activities in a place and time of their choosing. Content is accessible twenty four (24) hours-a-day from any location with an internet connection.
There are no grades for this course. Instead, students receive a complete or incomplete score based on satisfactory completion of the course. To successfully complete the course students are required to work through all learning activities and achieve 60% on all the knowledge check quizzes at the end of each module. Students are given unlimited quiz attempts and can challenge these at any time throughout the course.
Upon completion of each module, participants will be issued a faculty digital certificate noting the number of educational hours.
