Convocation Spotlight: McKayla Kirkpatrick

MSc, Public Health

21 November 2024

Having completed her master of science in public health at the University of Alberta, McKayla Kirkpatrick is now pursuing further education as a MD student at the University of Calgary.

She looks back on the day she defended her thesis and celebrates how far she has come since her bachelor of science degree at MacEwan University.

What are you most proud of from your time in the program?

I’ve never been more nervous than I was the day I defended my thesis. I couldn’t be more proud of the way my hard work, along with the time and dedication of the people who supported me, came together to create an amazing morning of sharing the research I poured so much of my heart into.

What was your go-to spot on campus?

I didn’t have a go-to spot, but a walk through main campus during fall with the leaves changing colours?! Simply unmatched.

Did you receive any financial awards throughout your studies?

In the second year of my program I was honoured to receive the Graduate Student Engagement Scholarship (GSES) from the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

What advice would you give to a student thinking of entering this program?

If you’re considering it, go for it! As cheesy as it sounds, the best part of this program was the incredible people that I met. You will truly learn so much from your classmates and their experiences.

What comes next for you?

This summer I started medical school at the University of Calgary. I’m so excited to pursue my dream of becoming a physician. I know my training in public health will give me a unique perspective on addressing the health-care needs of my patients in a holistic manner that considers factors such as the social determinants of health.
