Residency Training
The Department of Oncology offers residency training programs that are affiliated with Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Palliative Care Medicine and three Residency Programs in Medical Physics. It provides high quality specialist care to patients with cancer that emphasizes leading medical-scientific research and advanced education and teaching practices. The resident's clinical experience represents the competence and confidence to ultimately care for patients with cancer independently. While primarily trained as clinicians, our residents also gain a solid understanding of the principles of research and evidence-based medicine.
The Department of Oncology is pleased to announce our newest Residency program in Adult Palliative Medicine. This program is a two-year Medicine Subspecialty accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The seven Residency programs are well regarded and have an enviable success rate for candidates challenging the Fellowship examinations.
The knowledge base in Oncology is rapidly expanding and diversifying and with it the career opportunities within Oncology's traditional subspecialties.
The Alberta Health Services Cancer Care's annual reports show an increasing incidence of cancer, attesting to the continually increasing demand for highly trained specialized oncologists and medical physicists. As the knowledge base increases, oncology practitioners will need to meet the demand for more highly specialized expertise.
