How to Apply

Application Process

  1. Compile your Supporting Documents - We recommend you compile all supporting documents before starting your application. You will be instructed to upload your supporting documents (except reference letters) as PDF files directly to the online application portal. You must upload your documents on or before the application submission deadline.

    • Official transcripts from all institutions attended. Refer to the FGSR Application Requirements for Academic Documents.
    • Curriculum Vitae (Resume)
    • Statement of Purpose
      • 1 page essay briefly explaining why you are interested in cancer research, outlining your academic career so far and your tentative career plans in this field.
    • 3 Letters of reference

      • To be uploaded to the online application separately by each referee

  2. Complete and submit your University of Alberta Graduate Online Application. A $135 CAD non-refundable application fee is required. Payments can be made using a valid VISA or MasterCard credit card.

  3. After application materials are reviewed by the Graduate Coordinating Committee (GCC), applicants being considered for admission to the Cancer Sciences graduate program will be contacted for a brief Zoom interview with the prospective supervisor and a small panel including the Cancer Science Graduate Program Director; Associate Chair, Education; and one other member of the GCC.

Cancer Sciences MSc (Thes) & PhD Specialization

Candidates applying to Cancer Sciences should have an strong educational background in any of the following fields; Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, Immunology, Physiology, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Pharmacology, Medicine, Nutrition.

Master of Science (MSc) Program
  • A four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • An admission grade point average of 3.3 on most 4-point grading systems or B+ on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.
Doctoral (PhD) Program
  • A master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • An admission grade point average of 3.3 on most 4-point grading systems or B+ on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.

Identify a Potential Supervisor

Candidates applying to Cancer Sciences are strongly encouraged to identify a Principal Investigator who is willing to pay their stipend prior to applying for admission.  Feel free to contact principal investigator(s) whose area of research is of interest to you. The best way to contact them is by email and it is useful to attach a copy of your C.V.

English is the primary language of instruction at the University of Alberta and all applicants must be proficient in English.

If your earlier education was at a foreign academic institution, and that school is not recognized by the University of Alberta as having English language instruction, you will require one of the following:

  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): minimum score of 600 (paper-based) or 100 IBT (internet-based)

  • International English Language Testing System (IELTS): minimum score of 7.0, with at least 6.0 in each of the four modules that include listening, academic writing, academic reading and speaking

  • Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE): minimum score of 68

The Department of Oncology does not accept the Duolingo Test.

Medical Physics MSc (Thes) & PhD Specialization

Candidates applying to Medical Physics must have an strong educational background in any of the following fields; Physics, Biophysics, Engineering Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physical Sciences, Electrical Engineering, General Engineering.

No Winter Admission

Master of Science (MSc) Program
  • A four-year baccalaureate degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • An admission grade point average of 3.3 on most 4-point grading systems or B+ on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.
Doctoral (PhD) Program
  • A master’s degree, or its academic equivalent, from an academic institution recognized by the University of Alberta.
  • An admission grade point average of 3.3 on most 4-point grading systems or B+ on most letter grading systems, based on your most recent two years of full time study (or equivalent) is required.

Medical Physics applicants are not required to identify a potential supervisor prior to applying for admission. Students admitted to this program identify a supervisor after completion of full-time coursework during the first year of enrollment.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE) Physics Score

If your most recent degree was not granted in Canada, a minimum score of 850 on the GRE Physics subject test is required.
