Dr. Bukola Salami, RN, MN, PhD
Dr Bukola Salami is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Nursing, University of Alberta. Her research program focuses on policies and practices shaping migrant health. As of July 2019, she has been involved in around 40 funded research projects. She is the lead on 18 of these projects with funding from national and international agencies. Her projects have been funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada; Women and Children's Health Research Institute; Policywise for Children and Families; MSI Foundation; and the Canadian Institute for Health Research. Dr. Salami has 36 published scholarly articles (another 18 are under review), 2 book chapters, and 8 reports. She has led research projects on well-being of temporary foreign workers, parenting and mental health promotion practices of African immigrants, mental health of immigrant adults, mental health of immigrant children, as well as mental health of African, Black, and Caribbean youths.
She represents the University of Alberta on the steering committee of the Worldwide Universities Network (Global Africa Group). She leads a 2019-2020 WUN-funded project with 20 scholars from 4 continents and 9 countries conducting a scoping review of the global literature on African migrant child health. Dr Salami has been recognized for her community engagement work to improve immigrant health. She has co-led the research committee for the Edmonton Local Immigrant Partnership, and was a committee member of the Edmonton Community Foundation (ECF) Vital Signs Report on the Social Inclusion of Immigrants. She was also a board member of the Africa Center (in Alberta). She is a council member of the Alberta College of Social Workers.
Dr. Salami has received several awards for research excellence and community engagement: 100 Accomplished Black Women in Canada; Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Emerging Nurse Researcher of the Year Award; College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) Award for Nursing Excellence; and Alberta Avenue Edmonton Top 40 under 40.
