How to Apply

 

Thank you for your interest in the Engage North Internship. Our program is on hold for the 2023 season but please check back for updates from our office.

Eligibility

Any student in good academic standing, and who is registered at the time of application in a Baccalaureate or Graduate program at the University of Alberta, in a discipline suitable to the community project being applied to, may apply. Engage North Interns will focus on applied employment-style projects. Interns will be expected to partake in aspects of community life in order to increase their ability to work constructively with, and understand the culture of the community in which they are placed, as well as to gain first-hand experience with the issues currently faced by Northern and Indigenous communities.

Timeline

Application Deadlines:

a) Dene Tha' First Nation Spring Internship: Opened until filled with application review starting March 14, 2022.

b) Beaver First Nation Summer Internships: Applications accepted until March 25, 2022

c) Dene Tha' First Nation - Fish Habitat and Water Monitoring and Science Education and Curriculum Development: Applications accepted until filled

d) Dene Tha' First Nation - Health, Wellness & Youth Recreation: Applications accepted until March 25, 2022

e) Pangnirtung Nunavut: Applications accepted until March 25, 2022

f) Legal Aid Nunavut: Applications accepted until March 25, 2022

Interviews: Interviews for the summer internships are planned for the week of March 28, 2022

Pre-Departure Orientation: May 2-May 13, 2022
Departure to Communities for in-person internships: Approximately May 16, 2022
Intern Debrief: August 26-27, 2022
Report Deadline: September 20, 2022

Award Details

Interns will receive:

  • One to two weeks of pre-departure orientation in Edmonton during the first two weeks in May (will be modified for interns joining program late or who must travel before orientation is complete)
  • Travel to and from Edmonton to their host community at the beginning and end of the placement;
  • Debriefing/re-entry session in Edmonton immediately following the conclusion of the internships, usually held the last week in August;
  • Accommodations within the host community for the period of the in-person internship period (varies between positions).  Note that the interns will be living in the community-provided housing, which usually involves shared accommodations with a fellow intern, and the interns will be responsible for preparing their own meals and deep-cleaning the accommodations at the end of the internship;
  • An internship stipend of $2,000-$2,500 per month for undergraduate and graduate placements, provided directly to each intern throughout the summer;
  • Other types of resources such as language and communication supports.

Note: The internship stipend maybe taxable
