Research Description
Membrane proteins are the focus of an intense research as they are involved in many human diseases. A large part of these diseases is due to a mis-targeting of membrane proteins within the cells, thus leading to defective cells and defective organs.
The research in my lab is focused on the trafficking mechanisms of membrane proteins in the cellular environment, with a particular emphasis on the bicarbonate transporters. Mutants of the kidney anion exchanger 1 (kAE1) can induce a kidney disease, the distal renal tubular acidosis (dRTA). This disease causes failure to thrive, muscle weakness and renal calculi.
This is an exciting area of research, as a better understanding of the general cellular mechanisms governing the trafficking of membrane proteins could lead to cure lethal diseases such as cystic fibrosis or some cancers.
