Message from the Director

The Medically At-Risk Driver (MARD) Centre is a unique partnership between the University of Alberta, the Government of Alberta, and industry. The MARD Centre was established in 2008 as a research and knowledge translation centre to address the individual and public safety issues related to medically at-risk and medically impaired drivers. The MARD Centre is the first research centre in the world to offer integrated efforts targeting the discovery, development and assessment of evidence-based solutions to identify and assess medically at-risk and medically impaired drivers.

Over the years, we have continued to build our program of research and knowledge translation efforts on issues related to the safety, mobility, and support of medically at-risk and medically impaired drivers. We also have increasingly focused our energies on research and knowledge translation initiatives related to mobility support for seniors and persons with disabilities (PWD). As you can see as you scroll through this website, MARD initiatives include, but are not limited to, regional and provincial surveys on perceptions and use of alternate transportation in rural and urban Alberta; development of a Transportation Toolkit for implementation of alternate transportation for seniors in rural and urban Alberta; as well as initiating and collaborating on a number of pilots related to transportation services for seniors and PWD in rural Alberta

Since inception, MARD has worked closely with the Alternate Transportation for Seniors Advisory Committee, as well community, government, and university stakeholders. We look forward to working with our research colleagues and community and government partners to develop innovative solutions related to the safety, mobility, and support of medically at-risk and medically impaired drivers.
