CLC Brown Bag Lunch Reading with Hiromi Goto

Hiromi Goto's first novel, Chorus of Mushrooms (1994), received the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best First Book in the Caribbean and Canada region and was co-winner of the Canada-Japan Book Award. Her short stories and poetry have been widely published in literary journals and anthologies. Her second novel, The Kappa Child (2001), was a finalist for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize for Best Regional Book, and was awarded the James Tiptree Jr. Memorial Award. Her first children’s novel, The Water of Possibility, was also published that year. Hopeful Monsters, a collection of short stories, was released in 2004. Her YA/Crossover novel, Half World (2009), was long-listed for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and received the 2010 Sunburst Award and the Carl Brandon Society Parallax Award. Her long poem, co-written with David Bateman, came out in Fall 2009. Wait Until Late Afternoon is her first book-length poetry publication. Darkest Light, companion book to Half World, is her latest novel. It is the first book released under the new Razorbill Imprint of Penguin Canada. She was 2014 Guest of Honour, with N.K. Jemisin, at WisCon38.
Hiromi Goto is an active member of the literary community, a writing instructor, editor and the mother of two (big) children. She has served in numerous writer-in-residencies and is currently in BC, working on an adult novel and a graphic novel.

CLC Brown Bag Lunch + Lilies Day at the U of A

Edmonton’s vibrant arts scene offers the University community unique opportunities for learning, research and delight. This year, Edmonton Opera produces a new Canadian opera called Lilies, composed by Kevin March, with libretto by Michel Marc Bouchard. Research units at the U of A are teaming up with Edmonton Opera to investigate the inner workings of the operatic creation.
The opera sets the story of Bouchard’s well-known play Les Feluettes, building on musical genres ranging from European art music to French-Canadian folk tunes. The Canadian Literature Centre and Sound Studies Initiative are exploring the sounds and story of this work during “Lilies Day at the U of A” on October 20th.
“Lilies Day” comprises two free events that are open to the public. First, the CLC hosts librettist and playwright Michel Marc Bouchard for a special reading in their Brown Bag Lunch series at noon on October 20th. Then at 2:00 pm, the Sound Studies Initiative hosts an interactive listening event exploring the musical inspirations behind the opera. This Sound Session is led by ethnomusicologist Dr. Julia Byl, and features Lilies composer Kevin March.
“Lilies Day at the U of A” is part of Edmonton Opera‘s community programming for this opera.

Aislinn Hunter is the author of seven books: three books of poetry, three books of fiction and a book of lyric essays. She is a contributing editor at Arc Magazine and has contributed to numerous anthologies. She has a BFA in The History of Art and in Creative Writing from the University of Victoria, an MFA from The University of British Columbia, an MSc in Writing and Cultural Politics from The University of Edinburgh where she has just completed a PhD in English Literature. She teaches Creative Writing part-time at Kwantlen Polytechnic University and lives in Vancouver with her husband Glenn and two Border collies.

Madeleine Thien was born in Vancouver. She is the author of the story collection Simple Recipes, and three novels, Certainty; Dogs at the Perimeter, shortlisted for Berlin’s International Literature Prize and winner of the Frankfurt Book Fair’s 2015 Liberaturpreis; and Do Not Say We Have Nothing, which won the 2016 Giller Prize and was longlisted for the 2016 Man Booker Prize. Her books and stories have been translated into 25 languages. Her work has been awarded the Amazon.ca First Novel Award and has been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize.

Vivek Shraya is a Toronto-based writer and artist. Diana Davidson’s debut novel Pilgrimage was shortlisted for the Alberta Readers’ Choice Award in 2014 and was a The Edmonton Journal bestseller. She is the winner of the Writers’ Guild of Alberta Jon Whyte Memorial Essay award and has been long-listed for CBC Writes. Davidson has a PhD in literature and is currently the Director of the Public Library Services Branch with the Government of Alberta and was recently recognized by the Canada Council for the Arts, through the Governor General’s Literary Awards, for her work in making books available to visually-impaired library users.

Larissa Lai is the author of When Fox Is a Thousand, Salt Fish Girl, sybil unrest with Rita Wong, Automaton Biographies, Eggs in the Basket, and Slanting I, Imagining We: Asian Canadian Literary Production in the 1980s and 1990s. She is a recipient of the Astraea Foundation Emerging Writers Award and has been shortlisted for the Books in Canada First Novel Award, the City of Calgary W.O. Mitchell Award, the bpNichol Chapbook Award, and the Dorothy Livesay Prize. She holds a Canada Research Chair in Creative Writing at the University of Calgary and directs The Insurgent Architects’ House for Creative Writing.

Jael Richardson is the author of The Stone Thrower: A Daughter’s Lesson, a Father’s Life, a memoir based on her relationship with her father, CFL quarterback Chuck Ealey. The book received a CBC Bookie Award and earned Richardson an Acclaim Award and a My People Award. Excerpts from her first play, my upside down black face, are published in the anthology T-Dot Griots. Richardson has an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Guelph. She lives in Brampton where she serves as the Artistic Director for the Festival of Literary Diversity (FOLD).

Join us Wednesday, September 21 at 12:00 PM (noon) in the Student Lounge of the Old Arts Building for a Brown Bag Lunch reading by poet, novelist, short story writer, and essayist Louise Dupré. This reading will be in both French and English. Louise Dupré will be accompanied by CLC Director Marie Carrière in her bilingual reading.
Poet, novelist, short story writer, and essayist, Louise Dupré is a writer whose work has garnered critical and public acclaim. Her poetry collections include Noir déjà, Tout près, Plus haut que les flammes, which was awarded the Governor General’s Award in 2011 as well as the Grand Prix Québecor du Festival International de la Poésie. She is the recipient of the prix Alfred-Desrochers and the prix Ringuet. She was admitted into the Académie des lettres et des sciences humanines of the Royal Society of Canada and the Académie des lettres du Québec.

Science makes things happen, but poetry ‘makes nothing happen.’ Or is it the other way around? How can the two cultures be bridged? What do they have to say to each other? Sit in on the conversation with three poets who are making science poetry happen:
- Internationally renowned poet Christian Bök has encoded a poem (called ‘Orpheus’) into the genome of a bacterium so that, in reply, the cell builds a protein that encodes yet another poem (called ‘Eurydice’).
- Weyman Chan’s new collection, Human Tissue explores the history of our making and socializing a prototype misfit and constructing the conditions of alienation. What’s a monster to do?
- Alice Major’s tenth collection, Standard Candles, tackles cosmology as a source of inspiration and metaphor. Edmonton’s former poet laureate has delved into sciences from archeology to zoology for her work.
