Marcie Whitecotton-Carroll - 21 November 2022
The Department of Linguistics Teaching Awards and Quality Assessment Committee (TAQA) has established the annual Outstanding Teaching Assistant (TA) Award to recognize exceptional work of graduate student TAs. Award recipients go “above and beyond” to provide high-quality learning experience to students in undergraduate linguistics courses. In their decision to give this year’s award to Alex Rice, the Committee mentioned his consistent excellence as a TA, as well as his breadth of knowledge.
The Inaugural Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award recipient is Alexander Rice.
Alex is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta. Alex has a background in the translation and localization industry and specializes in language documentation and description, corpus linguistics, multimodality, and cognitive linguistics. For nine years, Alex has worked with Quechua speakers in the Ecuadorian Amazon and enjoys every moment of doing fieldwork. Alex's approach to teaching is centred on 'being real' with students and creating inclusive and collaborative environments for student success. If Alex had any free time, he would spend it hiking and fishing.
