The Department of Linguistics is pleased to announce Dr. Antti Arppe, along with co-applicants, Dr. Jordan Lachler (UofA), Dr. Juhani Järvikivi (UofA) and Dr. Trond Trosterud (U of Tromso) have been awarded a Partnership Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC).
From the SSHRC website regarding Partnership Grants:
Partnership Grants support formal partnerships between academic researchers, businesses and other partners that will advance knowledge and understanding on critical issues of intellectual, social, economic and cultural significance. By fostering mutual co-operation and sharing of intellectual leadership, the grants allow partners to innovate, build institutional capacity and mobilize research knowledge in accessible ways. The grants may also be used to help establish partnered chairs and research centres.
The title of the project is 21st Century Tools for Indigenous Languages. This project supports the revitalization and sustained daily use of indigenous languages in all spheres of life by developing modern language technology for these languages in partnership with their respective communities. With Plains Cree (Nêhiyawêwin) as the spearhead case, [there will be] research and development through these partnerships to create and evaluate linguistic tools which are comparable in quality to the resources available for the world's major languages and that facilitate the use of the language in all domains of life by members of the Plains Cree communities.
For a complete list of collaborators and partners please see the SSHRC website found here.
Congratulations Antti et al!
