The Department of Linguistics is pleased to welcome Raymond W. Gibbs, Professor of Psychology, University of California, Santa Cruz, as a Distinguished Visitor to the University of Alberta, September 8 - 15, 2014.
Raymond W. Gibbs is a Professor of Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is a Psycholinguist who neatly bridges Linguistics, Psychology and other fields interested in the scientific and scholarly study of language.
His research addresses figurative language--predominantly metaphor, idioms, verbal irony and metonymy, as well as embodiment & cognition, and discourse & poetic studies, among many other topics. His work tackles fundamental questions about language processing, comprehension, use and motivation.
He conducted his undergraduate work at Hampshire College in Amherst, MA. He then completed his graduate studies at the University of California, San Diego. Two post-doctoral positions, at Yale and Stanford University, preceded his appointment at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
He has published 10 books, nearly 150 journal articles, 75 book chapters in addition to numerous book reviews. He is also a sought-after plenary presenter at international, interdisciplinary conferences, symposia and workshops.
Professor Gibbs will give three presentations, including a Town & Gown event open to the general public. He'll also participate in a Psychology Event: PEDANTIC.
