This course provides a general introduction to neurolinguistics, the study of language in the brain. We will introduce the neuro-anatomy of language, and we will discuss in detail the language disruptions that result from damage to the brain (aphasia) as well as other language disorders in adults and children. Historically, the study of aphasia has been essential in forwarding our knowledge of the neural organization of language, but we will also consider recent innovations in neuroimaging (e.g., fMRI) and electrophysiology (e.g., EEG/ERP) and what these techniques can add to our understanding of language function. We will also explore language lateralization (left brain, right brain) and bilingualism.
Prerequisites: Ling 101 & 204, or permission from the instructor.
LING 400 A1 _ Psycholinguistics (52954)

This course provides a general introduction to the field of psycholinguistics, which encompasses the experimental study of language comprehension, production, and acquisition. We will examine the ways in which speakers understand and produce language across visual and auditory modalities, with topics including speech perception, morphological processing, and sentence comprehension and production. Throughout the course, we will explore the methods used in psycholinguistic research to uncover the ways in which language is represented in the minds of speakers, and we will present models of language processing arising from this research for critical examination.
Prerequisites: Any two of LING 308, 309 or 310. Recommended: a course in elementary statistics.
