June 2020 Faculty Awards and Accolades

Faculty Recognition
Dr. Valerie Carson: IJBNPA Most Cited Methodology Paper Award Winner. Dr. Carson and her colleagues’ paper entitled ‘’Sedentary Behavior Research Network (SBRN) - Terminology Consensus Project process and outcome’’ was selected as the winner in the most cited Methodology paper category. This award is based on citation reports from Web of Science of the most cited papers published in 2017.
Dr. Craig Chapman: NSERC Discovery Grant. The Discovery Grants Program supports ongoing programs of research with long-term goals rather than a single short-term project or collection of projects. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances. Dr. Chapman received this award for his research program related to leveraging new technologies to study the brain and movement behaviour of humans during dynamic decision making
Dr. Shintaro Kono: Faculty Research Grant from the China Institute at U of A. Dr. Kono received this award for his research project entitled: "Developing Culturally Sensitive Leisure Education for Chinese Immigrants to Enhance Social Integration and Well-Being."
Dr. Danielle Peers: Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Disability and Movement Cultures. Dr. Peers is the newest KSR researcher to receive a Canada Research Chair, joining Dr. Kerry Courneya and Dr. Tanya Berry in this prestigious rank. Their CRC research will work with all levels of Canadian sport and recreation, as well as with emerging critical race, disability, Indigenous, feminist and queer scholars to start an important shift in how Canadians understand and create inclusion in all movement cultures. These grants recognize the creativity and innovation that are at the heart of all research advances. Dr. Steinback received this award for his research program related to the responses and adaptations to low oxygen exposure.
Student Recognition
Lindsey Berthelsen (MSc student): NSERC Canadian Graduate Scholarship—a competitive national scholarship promoting research in the fields of natural sciences and engineering. Lindsey received this award for her research project entitled: “Autonomic influence on the heart rate and rhythm responses to apnea at altitude.”
Rylan Kafara (PhD candidate): Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Scholarship. Offered to outstanding students registered in, or admissible to, a doctoral program. This is the most prestigious graduate award administered by the University of Alberta. Rylan received this award for his research project entitled: “Keep Moving: City Centre Leisure, Ethnography of Care, and the Homeless Habitus.”
Lauren Maier (BKin): NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award—a competitive studentship supporting research in the fields natural sciences and engineering.
Shannon Pynn (PhD student): SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship & President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction (top-up award). Shannon received this award for her research project entitled: “Developing an Education and Support Program to Improve Sport Parents’ Emotional Intelligence.”
Ly-Anh Reid (MSc student): CIHR Masters Award. Ly-Anh received the CIHR Masters award for her research project entitled: “Exercise timing in gestational diabetes mellitus.”
Staff Recognition
Howie Draper (Pandas Hockey Head Coach): Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team Head Coach. Draper, who has led Canada to gold (2019) and silver (2020) at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship, returns behind the bench as head coach for the 2020/2021 season. READ MORE
Victoria Meah (Postdoctoral Fellow): CIHR Fellowship Award. Victoria received the CIHR Fellowship Award for her research entitled: “Cardiovascular stress testing in pregnancy and the prediction of preeclampsia.”
Alumni Recognition
Dr. David Legg (PhD, 2000): 2020 Alumni Honour Award. Dr. Legg is recognized for being an advocate of the Paralympics and Adapted Physical Activity.
Dr. Art Quinney, (PhD, ‘74): 2020 Alumni Service Award. Dr. Quinney is recognized for being the driving force behind the Alberta Centre for Active Living and the Physical Fitness Testing Centre
