South Campus Operations and Events Crew: Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Canadian Sport Event of the Year Award. The South Campus operation and events crew were honoured for their contributions to the 106th Grey Cup and 2018 Grey Cup Festival.
Athletics Recognition
Amanda Rummery (Steadward Bears Para-Athlete): Amanda won three silver medals at the Desert Challenge Games in the T46 category. The medals were in the 100 metre, 200 metre, and 400 metre. Amanda had a good season opener in all of the events with times of 14.45 seconds in the 100 metre and 28.90 seconds in the 200 metre. However, the race she is most proud of is breaking the Canadian record in the 400 metre with a time of 65.29 seconds! The Desert Challenge Games are a multi-day competition held in Phoenix, Arizona for individuals ages 6 through adulthood with a physical, visual or intellectual disability. The 2019 event ran from May 22-26th and is part of the World Para Athletics Grand Prix.
Alumni Recognition
Jim Donlevy: Alberta Sports Wall of Fame in Hockey/Football Builder category. Jim served as the Golden Bears Football head coach for 18 seasons (1971-82, 1984-90), garnering the most wins of any U of A football coach with a record of 89wins, 69 losses and 3 ties. Under his leadership, the Golden Bears football team participated in four Vanier Games ('71, '72, '80 nad '81), winning in 1972 and 1980. Jim has made significant contributions to amateur football coaching certification and administration at both the provincial and national levels. Following his retirement from the University of Alberta in 1993, he served as the head of the Western Junior Hockey League's Educational Advisory Program. READ MORE
Herman Dorin: Alberta Sports Wall of Fame Pioneer Award (Wrestling). Herman was a member of the Golden Bears Wrestling team from 1949 - 1953. Between 1951 and 1966, Herman was undefeated in provincial competition, winning the light heavyweight or heavyweight provincial title for many years. He served as a long-time educator and wrestling coach in rural Alberta after leaving the University of Alberta. READ MORE
