Former UAlberta coach and Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation professor, and current Professor Emeritus John M. Hogg has been inducted into the UAlberta Sport Wall of Fame as a builder of university sport.
The idea that sports are mostly a mental exercise is one of the keys to winning, and when John Hogg, '78 MA, '82 PhD, introduced his innovative sport psychology courses at the University of Alberta, people paid attention. He was involved in 12 U of A sports championships and worked as a coach and sport psychologist in more than 10 sports, helping athletes ranging from Olympians to world champions. His expertise in the field of mental preparation also led to his work being shared through hundreds of publications and conference presentations. Hogg's work as an innovator also extended to the U of A aquatics program. In 1978, he became head coach of the swim programs. Over the next 25 years, he restructured the entire program, combining the women's and men's swim teams to create one unified group of athletes. Hogg's legacy is that of a coach, a teacher and a builder who believed that great improvements in sport are possible if coaches and athletes are given the tools to succeed.
John joins three former UAlberta athletes to make up the 2017 Sports Wall of Fame induction class. The Sports Wall of Fame honours athletes and builders who have made significant contributions to University of Alberta athletic programs.
Dr. Hogg's accomplishments were also celebrated at the 2017 Alumni Awards, which took place on Monday, September 25, 2017 at the Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium.
