Dear Elnaz Graduate Scholarship In Memory Of Women, Life and Freedom
Eligibility
- Superior Academic Achievement
- Must be registered in the second year or greater in the program
- Preference given to a student who is not holding more than $15,000 in funding during the tenure of the award
- Preference given to an Iranian or Afghan student who identifies as a woman and/or given to an Iranian or Afghan student who belongs to the LGBTQIA2S+ community
- Selection based on academic achievement
- Open to foreign nationals holding Canadian study permits
- Open to applicants in course-based study programs
- Open to applicants in thesis-based study programs
- Open to applicants in doctoral programs
- Open to applicants in masters programs
- Open to full time registered students only
- Additional Information: Elnaz Nabiyi was a passenger of the Ukrainian Airliner Flight PS752 which was shot down by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of the government of Iran on January 8, 2020. Elnaz, a keen advocate of educational advancement and freedom of choice, was a Ph.D. student at the University of Alberta at the time of the downing of Flight PS752. On September 16, 2022, Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian girl was killed in the custody of Iran's morality police in Tehran, for not properly wearing a compulsory hijab. In Iran, the slogan "Women, Life, Freedom" was first used at Mahsa's burial and later followed through nationwide protests against the totalitarian regime of Iran.
- This scholarship is created in memory of the "women, life, freedom" revolution, and all the victims of Flight PS752 by Dear Elnaz Corporation, a nonprofit organization with the mission to contribute to the educational advancement of those in need.
How to apply
By nomination only. Students should contact their department for details on the application process. Nominations are submitted to GPS by the Department (or Faculty). The Graduate Scholarship Committee makes the final decision.
