Master of Engineering (MEng)

Prepare to take the next step in your career.

The University of Alberta’s Master of Engineering (MEng) course-based programs are valuable for engineers at any career stage wishing to enhance their technical, managerial, and leadership skills. Our students learn from top academics in their fields and train in internationally renowned facilities. Students participate in practical Alberta-focused projects that prepare them to demonstrate their skills and knowledge to potential employers.

MEng students have access to the University of Alberta’s Engineering Employment Center resources (job postings, workshops, networking opportunities, career fairs) and benefit from dedicated student coaching and communications support customized for engineering students.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers eight distinct MEng specializations as follows:

Construction

Environmental Engineering and Science

Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental

Mining

Petroleum

Structural

Transportation

Water Resources

The program objectives and learning outcomes for each MEng specialization are available on our Graduate Student Resources webpage and under MEng Welcome Packages.

  • Academic credentials recognized by Alberta licensing organization (APEGA) if your undergraduate program is in a foreign engineering program

Requirements

The requirements to get into the MEng course-based program are the same as the requirements for the MSc thesis-based program. All applicants applying must meet the academic requirements as well as the English language requirements.

For an overview of the specific requirements for each MEng specialization, please check the graduate students resources page. Below are the general MEng requirements taken directly from the University Calendar:

The Master of Engineering is a course-based degree program that requires a minimum of: 24 units (eight single-term graduate courses or equivalent), of which 15 units (five single-term courses or equivalent) should be in the candidate’s major field of interest, one 3-unit capstone project.

In some areas of specialization, an additional 6 units (two single-term courses or equivalent) more than the minimum are required. The Department will require more 3-unit courses in cases where the undergraduate degree does not provide a superior background for the chosen area of specialization.

There is no second language requirement other than English for the degree of MEng.

Completion of University of Alberta Professional Development is required.

Length of Program

Candidates may complete the program in a minimum of nine months. The maximum time permitted for completion of a Master of Engineering program is four years from the date of first registration.

The program can be completed in one to four years. Students can choose to complete it in two years and take our customized communication course. The two-year option can qualify the students for a Post-Graduate Work Permit.

Course requirements vary depending on your specialization and students admitted to a MEng should contact the department to establish which courses to take.

The department also offers a joint MBA/MEng degree program with the School of Business. Any applications for the MBA/MEng program are made directly through the School of Business, so please contact their office directly if you are interested in the joint program.

For the program requirements, candidates should refer to the Department
Graduate Studies Handbook from the year in which they are admitted and Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) Graduate Program Manual.
