After Degree

General Requirements

All applicants must present the following:

  1. A 3- or 4-year degree from an accredited post-secondary institution
  2. A competitive Admission GPA (AGPA) based on the most recent *24 transferable credits without splitting a term. Please note that the required competitive AGPAs may change from year to year and throughout the admission cycle.

All applicants applying to the Bachelor of Education program at the University of Alberta are required to complete the Casper test as part of their application. More information about this admission requirement can be found here

While no specific course prerequisites exist for the After Degree, the length of the program will depend on the courses presented at the time of admission.

For the Secondary route, please consult the following majors and minors and their requirements. Note that these requirements can be presented at the time of admission or completed as part of the After Degree:

  • Majors (Please note that the Career and Technology Studies: Business, Administration, Finance (BIT) Major and the Second Languages: Italian are both in moratorium and no longer accepting applications.)
  • Minors

Notes

  1. After Degree program requirements are subject to yearly review. The degree requirements linked are applicable to the University Calendar.
  2. All degree coursework must be completed prior to May 1st. Degree must be awarded and confirmed on your transcripts for the document deadline.
  3. For all routes: if 6 credits in English Language/Literature (Elementary Education) or English/French Literature and Composition (Secondary) have not been successfully presented in the first degree, these must be successfully completed within the After Degree program to meet graduation requirements
  4. If 3 credits of Mathematics/Statistics/Computing Science are not presented upon admission to the Elementary After Degree route, it must be completed within the After Degree program to meet graduation requirements.
  5. Once you have applied, the University of Alberta will evaluate your application and determine whether your previous degree(s) is accredited.
  6. CTS Majors who hold an applicable journey certificate or degree (e.g., provincial and federal journey certification or two-year diploma) may be granted up to 30 credits advanced standing.
  7. All students are required to demonstrate English Language Proficiency and Spoken English Proficiency in addition to meeting the admission requirements for their program of choice.

* The number of new students admitted to any particular program or year of a program may vary depending on the number of available places and the promotion, departure, or graduation of continuing students. While the minimum admission average is 70% for high school applicants, and a minimum GPA of 2.0 for post-secondary applicants, all admissions are competitive and the actual admission averages may be higher than the minimum.
