Visual Arts & Design Forum: Ralph Crozier | Professor of History Emeritus, University of Victoria
China, Modern Art, and Global Modernities
Professor of History Emeritus, University of Victoria and Past President, World History Association, Crozier puts Chinese modern art and modernism in a global context by comparing it with the reception of modern Euro-American art in a number of Asian countries and raises the question of what light this might throw on modernity as a singular, originally Western, phenomenon or a variety of "alternative modernities". Publications include Art and Revolution in Modern China (University of California Press, 1988), "When Was Modern Chinese Art? A Short History of Chinese Modernism", in Josh Yiu, ed., Writing Modern Chinese Art (Seattle Art Museum and University of Washington Press, 2009), among others.
