Honorable Mention
With so many great entries submitted to the 2019/2020 Alberta School of Business International Photo Contest, we want to showcase some of the judging panel's other favourites and ones that just missed being named a finalist. We feel these photos really captured the spirit of the contest and it would be a shame not to share these with the rest of the world. The Lofoten Islands

It was a special day to walk around this small, fishing town in Norway to enjoy the mountains, ocean and crisp air. If you look closely, you will see the traditional Norwegian stockfish which was once a staple of this town.
Travelling is important because it widens your perspective, experiences in life and helps you learn more about others and yourself. The travel experiences that you have will be some of the best memories of your life and will more than often, will catch you by surprise (pun not intended).
Old Meets New

You often hear about the fantasies and stories of different countries and cultures, but it's not every day that you get to experience them. Traveling to Loch Ness proved that even something as unreal as the Loch Ness monster can feel plausible once you experience the place that the stories come from. Sitting and looking out on the Loch Ness and the peaceful Scottish countryside in the early morning made me realize that even if I didn't personally see the Loch Ness monster, the stories that were founded in this area hold more significance than anything else. Everyone has stories, and it's only when you travel that you can understand them.
You Only Live Once

I am basically a scaredy-cat when it comes to height. I don't even dare to ride roller coasters at the amusement park. But skydiving had strangely been on my bucket list since ever. I wanted to do it to push my limits and overcome my fear. And I was proud of myself when I finally pulled the trigger and checked it off at one of my favorite spots in New Zealand - Queenstown. It was even more amazing to be able to see the view of The Remarkables from the top.
Gaining a New Perspective

Every opportunity to go outside your country is an opportunity to gain a new perspective. Here I was teaching English, but I quickly realized that I was in fact the student. Spend your travel time exploring culture, meeting locals, eating food, and learning how others perceive the world.

I spent the last summer of my undergrad studying abroad in Japan. The metropolis of Tokyo, with soaring towers and maze-like concrete sprawl, was quite a contrast to the expansive prairie skies that I grew up with. Iiyama, a sleepy city with immense natural beauty, was the perfect place to visit and recenter myself. Nearby is Jigokudani Yaen Koen, a sanctuary for macaque monkeys. These animals have relatably adapted to their home by making regular use of one of the mountain hot springs. This picture shows a juvenile "snow monkey" drying off on its mother after a midsummer swim.

An artist born in Rome, Italy emigrates to the United States and then designs the largest illuminated glass work in the world for a train station in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. I can't think of a better sentence which exemplifies the goals of the University of Alberta MBA program. In Edmonton, we have students from around the globe with diverse backgrounds, experience and passions. I count myself as one of the few lucky individuals able to study alongside this group of gifted individuals.

The Nilgiri Tahr is an endangered species of mountain goats that can be seen only on the Nilgiri mountain ranges in South India. They are hardy animals that live on mountains and climb up steep mountain faces with ease. This picture was taken on a road trip that I went on in 2017, in an attempt to reconnect with nature. I clicked this picture just as the Tahr surveyed the path in front of it and disappeared into the steep mountain just below the cliff it is standing on.
Going on an Adventure

Traveling viewed as mostly fun is also very educational filled with adventure, the chance to meet new friends and ability to re-discover yourself. New Zealand, a place of glaciers, beaches, thermal wonders, lakes, mountains and more. Truly an adventures paradise, home to the greatest adventurer of all, Bilbo Baggins. Bilbo, like myself, a quiet cautious individual found strength and vigor that we didn't know existed until traveling across this land. While staying home can be comforting, only do you realize how big the world is once you step outside.

Hyderabad is a mixture of the old and the new, where ancient history jousts with technology on a daily basis. I visited this Nawabi city for a month long pedagogical training program in September 2017, and lived inside the sprawling campus of the University of Hyderabad, one of the premier universities in India. The campus is home to different kinds of animals, and has a very impressive floral presence. I took this picture on one of my morning walks, when the pristine beauty of nature mesmerized me.
Spirited Away

I have been to Chongqing twice and this photo was taken last summer. It is a historic building called Hong Ya Dong and it has already become the most famous view spot and representative of Chongqing. It is said that the inspiration of buildings in an animation film named Spirited Away was based on Hong Ya Dong. As we can see, this building will be brilliantly shining at night and there are lots of stores, restaurants and bars in different floors. I can enjoy the beauty of ancient architecture and experience local custom in Hong Ya Dong, feel how amazing to combining ancient wisdom with modern technology.
