Honorable Mention

With so many great entries submitted to the 2017/2018 School of Business International Photo Contest, we want to showcase some of the judging panel's other favourites and ones that just missed being named a finalist. We feel these photos really captured the spirit of the contest and it would be a shame not to share these with the rest of the world. Congratulations to all those chosen for Honorable Mention and thank you for contributing to the international atmosphere at the Alberta School of Business.

The City of Hong Kong

The Peak of Hong Kong
Cyrus Tung, BCom 2020
Hong Kong

I always thought Calgary was a big city... until I visited Hong Kong. Their downtown is like the size of 40 of our downtown's and I just found it fascinating to see how many skyscrapers they built. Like that's A LOT of skyscrapers. It's lights and colors during the night are so beautiful. It's such a nice view and I really hope I can visit that place again.

Exploring the Gorge

Exploring The Gorge
Gavin Konrad, BCom 2019
Tom Price, Australia

Studying outside of Canada has been the most important decision of my life so far. I was able to gain valuable experience about myself and about another part of the world. Studying abroad has also provided me with numerous friendships and relationships with people from around the world that I would not have gained otherwise. I believe studying abroad is very important because it provides you with additional academic, social, and cultural knowledge that studying at home can't fully provide.

Reflection

Reflection
Ishani Vashisht, BCom 2018
Kerala, India

Exposure to serene locations is relaxing. Relaxation puts our otherwise VERY active minds at ease and creates a gateway for reflection. On an average day, rushing between engagement to engagement often does not allow time for introspection. This self reflection is critical to help us analyze why we may react to events in a particular way. This consciousness aids in clarifying our "centers" and encourages us to translate that reflection into improvements for future engagements. Thus, the importance of traveling can be embodied through one word, Reflection.

Scotland was and still is my home.

Kumano Kodo

旅(Journey)
Sarah Zhang, BCom 2019
Kumano Kodo, Japan

Kumano Kodo is a series of pilgrimage routes undertaken since 700BC; although the temple was the destination, the importance of the pilgrimage laid within the growth of character throughout the journey. Likewise, was my stay in Japan. Experiencing life in a new country was the end goal, but throughout this process I experienced profound change within myself. Travelling abroad allowed me to a form connections around the globe, appreciate what the world had to offer, and reminded me to treasure what I have at home. The experiences I had here will continue to shape my worldview in the future.

3 Hours Away

3 Hours Away
Victoria Currah, BCom 2019
Lisbon, Portugal

Experiencing multiple cultures is almost inevitable while on exchange in Europe. I started my journey in Denmark and quickly booked flights around the continent. The ability to hop on a plane for 3.5 hours and disembark to a complete shift in the lifestyle of the locals is something almost impossible to experience here in Canada. It blossoms a sense of wonder about the people of the world, one that only more travel can possibly attempt to answer.
