While attending the "Rock'n August Music and Car Festival" fundraiser put on by the Alberta Diabetes Foundation (August 6-10), diabetes researcher Cara Ellis was asked by 790 CFCW to do a radio interview and discuss both the event and her current research. Cara is pursuing her PhD graduate degree under the supervision of Alberta Diabetes Institute (ADI) member Dr. Greg Korbutt, and talked about her research project titled "Bioengineering a highly vascularised matrix for the ectopic transplantation of islets". This research is looking to develop a support structure for islet cell transplant recipients that offers advantages over existing techniques and has the potential to help diabetes patients in the near future. Apart from doing research, Cara loves spending time in the mountains hiking or skiing as well as being at home playing video games. Cara is extremely grateful for the support provided by the Alberta Diabetes Foundation and the excellent research environment that exists at the ADI.
