English for Academic Purposes

ESL Students

All IVSP students are required to take at least one English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course to better prepare them for academic studies in English. These are taught through the English Language School at the University of Alberta, while students receive support and advising from IVSP staff.

 

Students who do not have one of the required IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo scores as outlined below must contact ivspuab@ualberta.ca before applying. 

Placement Tests: All placement tests will be conducted online.

About the Courses

EAP 135 focuses on general and specialized English language development and grammar. The course will stress the need for clear and accurate use of language with the goal of building confidence and fluency in an academic setting.

It is 7 weeks long and students attend classes for 16.25 hours a week. The final grade is CR (Pass) or NC (Fail) and it is a non-credit bearing course.

EAP 136 focuses on general and specialized English language development and grammar. The course will stress the need for clear and accurate use of language with the goal of building confidence and fluency in an academic setting. 

It is 13 weeks long and students attend classes for 18 hours a week. The final grade is a letter grade and it is a non-credit bearing course.

EAP 137 is designed to support international undergraduate students to transition and succeed in a research intensive Canadian university.

It is 13 weeks long and students attend classes for 6 hours a week. The final grade is a letter grade and it is a 3-credit course.

All courses will be listed on the undergraduate transcript. 

English Language School Student Engagement Centre (SEC)

WE GO BEYOND CLASSROOM STUDY

In addition to their classes, all ELS students have access to our Student Engagement Centre. The centre and its daily workshops, activities, and engagement experiences are included in your tuition fee.
