Program Delivery

The ATEP Bachelor of Education Elementary generalist program prepares students to teach elementary school subjects in kindergarten to Grade 6. Although the program focuses on K-6, an Alberta teaching certificate allows you to teach kindergarten through Grade 12 in this province. Many of our graduates teach in remote and rural areas, where they undertake multi-faceted teaching positions. The generalist program prepares students to teach a variety of subjects, as needed by future employers.

The program consists of 120 units of coursework, including two field experiences. The field experience includes two practicums, which total 14 weeks. The Introductory Field Experience (IFX), is 5 weeks long, and generally completed in students’ third year of study. The Advanced Field Experience (AFX) is 9 weeks long, and generally completed in students’ final year of study. ATEP strives to place pre-service teachers at schools with a high Indigenous student population.

Students move through the program in a cohort and follow the ATEP schedule to foster learning between peers and community. Examples of ATEP’s program progressions are provided below:

FULL-TIME BACHELOR OF EDUCATION

ATEP’s full-time route is designed to be completed within 4 years. Courses are scheduled over 3 terms per year (3 courses in Fall, 3 courses in the Winter and 2 courses in the Spring semester - May and June) and this contributes to greater student success. In the first two years, students complete a wide range of courses across Faculties. In their third year, students begin advanced teacher education courses and field experience in elementary schools.

Note: Full-time status for funders is considered 9 credits or more in the fall and winter semester and 6 credits in Spring. .

PART-TIME BACHELOR OF EDUCATION

ATEP’s part-time route is designed to be completed within 6 years. Part-time status is considered no more than 6 credits in the fall and winter semesters. Courses are scheduled over 3 terms per year (Fall, Winter and Spring semesters) and are designed for online delivery. The first 5 years of the program are limited to 2 courses per semester. In the final year, students are required to commit to full-time studies, as they will be completing their field experiences in concurrent semesters.
