Admission Requirements

Students are required to meet certain minimum academic entrance requirements. As part of the application process, prospective ATEP students must submit a Letter of Intent and two references. For additional information, please refer to the Required Documents page.

After Degree Admissions Chart

A. Direct-Entry (High School) Students

A direct entry student is someone who is applying directly after high school graduation, and is under 21 years or older on September 1st of the year of application.

Requirements

A minimum average of 50% in:
  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • Social Studies 30-1, Aboriginal Studies 30, Math 30 (-1 or -2), or any Science 30
B. Mature (Non-Matriculated) Students

To be considered for admission as a mature applicant, a student must be 21 years of age or older on September 1st of the year of application.

Requirements

A minimum average of 50% in:
  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • Social Studies 30-1, Aboriginal Studies 30, Math 30 (-1 or -2) or any Science 30
C. High School Applicant with Less Than 24 Transferable Credits

If you have completed between 9 and 22.5 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework (typically 3-7 courses), you will need a 2.0 GPA in all transferable post-secondary courses.

Additionally, you will need a minimum average of 50% in the below courses:

  • English Language Arts 30-1
  • Social Studies 30-1, Aboriginal Studies 30, Math 30 (-1 or -2) or any Science 30

Please note: Applicants who present less than 9 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework are considered as High School Applicants (Category A). Applicants who present 24 credits or more of transferable post-secondary coursework are considered Transfer Student Applicants (Category D).

D. Transfer Student Requirements

To be considered a transfer student, you must have completed at least 24 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework. To apply to the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program, you will need an Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) of at least 2.0 over your most recent 24 transferable credits without breaking up a term.

A maximum of 60 credits obtained at another post-secondary institution may be granted as transfer credit toward any Bachelor of Education program where applicable. The year of program an applicant is admitted to depends on the number of transferable credits applicable to the program.

The Alberta Transfer Guide explains transfer credit agreements among post-secondary institutions in Alberta, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut. If you attended a post-secondary institution in a province other than Alberta,your courses may be eligible for transfer credit. The Education Student Services (ESS) Office will make the final determination.

Please note: Applicants with less than 24 credits will be assessed based on a combination of high school and post-secondary coursework (Category C). Applicants who present less than 9 credits of transferable post-secondary coursework are considered High School Applicants (Category A).

E. After Degree Program (Secondary - Language Major)
  • A completed post-secondary degree from a college or university
  • A minimum 2.0 AGPA
  • Speaker of any Indigenous language
