Courses


The MES is structured to allow you to work full-time while you study. This fully online program consists of ten graduate-level, three-credit courses.

Year One - 2025

EDU 503 Foundations of Curriculum ★3 (Winter Term, January - April)
Provides an introduction to conceptions of curriculum and their effects on pedagogy with particular emphasis on discerning and interpreting how personal, social, cultural, and political circumstances collude in the shaping of educational practices.
EDU 520 Foundations of School Leadership ★3 (Winter Term, January - April)
Explore the foundational dimensions of school leadership including instructional leadership, fostering effective relationships, supporting the application of foundational knowledge about Indigenous Peoples, visionary leadership, leading learning communities, modelling continuous professional learning, developing leadership capacity, understanding the social context influencing schooling, and managing school operations and resources.
EDU 521 School Leadership: Theory and Practice ★3 (Spring Term, April - May)
Hone leadership practices grounded in research to demonstrate mastery of Alberta's Leadership Quality Standard (LQS). Includes a job-embedded learning component in which participants visit, observe, and collaborate with a school leader or leadership team in a school setting of their choice, in which the Alberta Program of Studies is offered.
EDU 597 Globalisation and Intercultural Leadership ★3 (Summer Term, July - August)
This course provides students with the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of International leadership and supporting professional learning in an independent school setting. Throughout our learnings we will consider practical tools and best practices to address the opportunities and challenges of leading and supporting student achievement. Parents seek opportunities to position their children to have the best possible future. This can mean having children study outside of their country. There are institutions that have emerged to bridge this gap and support children who want to stay in the country for school. These institutions face tension as there tend to be different philosophies between the home country and the English-speaking institution.
EDU 597 Leadership in International Schools ★3 (Summer Term, July - August)
The course provides students with the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of International leadership and supporting professional learning in an independent school setting. Throughout our learnings we will consider practical tools and best practices to address the opportunities and challenges of leading and supporting student achievement. We will create the conditions for leaders to explore and compare different models of International Schools.
EDU 596 Leading School Operations ★ (Fall Term, September - December)
This course is designed for aspiring, new, and experienced school leaders, who are seeking to develop and enrich their management knowledge and skills. Leading school operations in Alberta requires the ability to effectively manage the school’s human, financial and material resources as outlined in the Leadership Quality Standard (Alberta Education, 2024). The course provides students with the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of managing school staff, funds, and facilities in the context of a shared vision, community connections, and legal requirements.

Year Two

EDU 510 Fundamentals of Educational Research ★3 (Winter Term, January - April)
Explores the findings of educational research, and works to apply the results of research to educational problems. Focuses on conceptualizing methods of educational research to specific and individual educational sites and issues.
EDU 514 Planning for Educational Change ★3 (Winter Term, January - April)

Explores how educational research can enhance educational change toward school improvement and focuses on utilizing appropriate research methods to create a site-based research proposal for a specific site.

EDU 515 Conducting Educational Research ★3 (Spring Term, April - May)
A supervised research assignment to develop and apply knowledge and skills related to data collection, data analysis techniques and research report presentation.
EDU 900 Program Synthesis ★3 (Summer Term, July - August)

A reflection and synthesis of learning from the Master of Education in Educational Studies in relation to the concepts of leadership and school/educational improvement that are the foundations of the program.

Ethics Requirement

In addition to the core and elective courses, all Master's students are required to take INT D 710: Ethics and Academic Citizenship.
