The Government of Canada offers several scholarship programs through Global Affairs Canada to support candidates from abroad who wish to conduct research in Canada on a short-term basis.  

University of Alberta International facilitates applying on behalf of eligible students who wish to conduct research supported by these international scholarship programs. Please review information regarding Eligibility, Important Dates, How to Apply, and For Host Supervisors.

These programs include:

  • Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP)
    Undergraduate and graduate students from:
    • Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos
    • Central America: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama
    • North America: Mexico
    • South America: Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela


  • Study in Canada Scholarships (SiCS)  
    Undergraduate and graduate students from:
    • Asia: Bangladesh, Nepal, Taiwan; 
    • Europe: Türkiye, Ukraine; 
    • The Middle East and North Africa: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia;
    • Sub-Saharan Africa: Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
