Research Internships

University of Alberta International Student & Visitor Services (ISVS) helps directly support several options for students from abroad who want to gain hands-on academic research experience at the UAlberta on a short-term basis.

These programs are open to students from all disciplines who are interested in expanding their knowledge in their area of study through collaboration with UAlberta's world-class researchers. Most are targeted to senior undergraduate students, although some are open to graduate-level students as well.

Research internship participants facilitated through the following programs are a guest (academic visitor) at the University of Alberta during their time on campus, and are not enrolled students.


University of Alberta Research Experience (UARE)

Open to: Senior undergraduate students at key partner institutions

Disciplines: All

Funding: $6,000 CAD to help cover flights, immigration, living expenses, health insurance, and accommodation

Duration: 12 weeks

Open to: Undergraduate and graduate students in designated countries

Staff assist with campus registration activities, such as CCIDs, waiver forms, and ONEcard. A formal Welcome Session orientation, professional development seminars, academic networking opportunities, and a research symposium are offered to program participants.

In order to foster belonging and community, ISVS offers opportunities for all international students and visitors to enjoy group events and cultural activities. Visiting researchers are welcome to participate in weekly social events, explore local cultural activities like weekend festivals, and trips to the Canadian Rocky Mountains.
