Undergraduate Medical Education

Radiology Electives are now being offered in a hybrid model with in-person and online sections

The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging is committed to providing medical students with a firm foundation of basic imaging over the course of their undergraduate education. 

Didactic lectures on radiology from part of the 1st and 2nd year medical student preclinical curriculum. In addition, we offer Radiology and Nuclear Medicine Shadowing to 1st and 2nd year medical students. To book a Radiology Shadowing session please contact Candice Belanger directly and she will match you with a radiologist, site and modality that suits your interests. 

At the beginning of 3rd year, during the MED 532 Link Course, medical student receive 14 hours of dedicated instruction in chest, body, neuro and musculoskeletal imaging in small grounds to prepare for the clinical rotations in Years 3 and 4. 

We offer a 1-2 week elective in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine for Year 3 and 4 medical students. The goal of each elective is to expose the students to all modalities in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, understand the role imaging in patient care and to provide an opportunity for practicing basic skills in image interpretation. 

Diagnostic Radiology elective are available at 5 sites in the city: University of Alberta Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Hospital, Sturgeon Community Hospital and the Misericordia Community Hospital

Nuclear Medicine electives are offered at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital.

The department is also very active in the Faculty of Medicine's Summer Student Research Program. All summer students in Radiology have the opportunity to present at the department's annual Research and QI Day.
