Undergraduate Medical Education
*Radiology Electives are now being offered in a hybrid model with in-person and online parts*
The Department of Radiology and Diagnostic Imaging is committed to providing medical students with a firm foundation of basic imaging over the course of their undergraduate education.
Didactic lectures in radiology form part of the 1st and 2nd year medical student preclinical curriculum. In addition, we offer Radiology Shadowing to 1st and 2nd year medical students. Please note that these electives are offered at the University of Alberta Hospital only and will only be scheduled in January, February and March.
At the beginning of 3rd year, during the MED 532 Link Course, medical students receive 14 hours of dedicated instruction in chest, body, neuro and musculoskeletal imaging in small groups to prepare for the clinical rotations in Yr 3 and 4.
We offer 1-2 week electives in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine for Yr 3 and 4 medical students. Diagnostic Radiology electives are available at 4 sites in the city: University of Alberta Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, Grey Nuns Hospital and the Misericordia Hospital. Nuclear Medicine electives are offered at the University of Alberta Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital. The goal of each elective is to expose the student to all modalities in Radiology and Nuclear Medicine, understand the role of imaging in patient care and to provide an opportunity for practicing basic skills in image interpretation. Please note that January, February and March is blocked off at the University of Alberta Hospital for our pre-clinical students.
University of Alberta medical students can contact Candice Belanger at radume@ualberta.ca to book an elective.
