Abstract:

Particular biases, or assumptions about social groups, are shared within cultures. An important question is how this type of cultural knowledge becomes shared. Language, as our primary means of communication, plays a key role in every form of bias, yet is often ignored. In this talk, I will discuss the multiple forms that language takes in this area of research. Come learn about the role of language in the everyday perpetuation of stereotypes and the power of the invisible in shaping our social worlds.
