Pre-Clinical Networked Medical Education Program
The Pre-Clinical Networked Medical Education program (PNME) was implemented in the year 2010-2011.
Under this program, select second-year undergraduate medical students spend four weeks of their GI block (from September to October), as well as four weeks of their Reproduction block (October to November) in a rural community providing them their first experience of clinical teaching. Currently NINE communities are engaged in the GI project as follows:
- Athabasca
- Bonnyville
- Beaverlodge
- Camrose
- Rimbey
- Sylvan Lake
- Peace River
- Provost
- Westlock
As well as FOUR communities engaged in the Repro project:
- Camrose
- Rimbey
- Peace River
- Sylvan Lake
The objectives of PNME are as follows:
- To develop a province-wide vision for Pre-Clinical Networked Medical Education with the capabilities of supporting learners in several networked sites throughout the continuum of their medical education.
- To immerse learners in generalist medical culture leading to an increase in the numbers of medical school graduates who choose generalist careers.
- To deliver an educationally sound, networked medical education program supported by appropriate ICT modalities.
PNME just finished its three-year term with the proposal forwarded to include the reproduction block for the next three-year term.
