Youth Council Projects
Each year, youth council members choose projects to work on that help WISEST achieve its goals in new and innovative ways. Past projects include:
- STEAM Exhibition - The WISEST Youth Council created a STEAM art exhibition to showcase amazing STEAM projects designed by high school students across Alberta. In the 2024 exhibition, we had 8 hardworking participants that created projects ranging from a watercolour collage that demonstrated bacteriophages’ ability to kill bacteria to landscaping a spring renewal scenery to advocate for climate change.
- STEM Profiles - The WISEST Youth Council STEM Profiles is an opportunity for women and gender-diverse individuals to be recognized as role models in the STEM community. This project showcases five people in different stages of their STEM careers who strongly reflect ambition, resilience, innovation, and charity through their experiences and accomplishments. The project involves a written profile for each of the five individuals displayed on the WISEST website and an opportunity to be interviewed for their achievements (possibilities include a podcast or Q&A).
- Pen Pal Program -
The WISEST Pen Pal Program gives high school students the opportunity to be paired with undergraduate students in an online program lasting for one month, in May, to learn about life as an undergraduate student, career paths, and tips for succeeding in a post-secondary STEM program. The program strives to connect high school students to their interests in STEM and allow students to dig deeper into these interests. Program applications for 2024 are now open until February 16, 2024.
- Conversation Cafes - 60-minute conversations where students grades 6-12 are welcome to participate and talk about STEM, mentorship and more!
- French STEM resources - a repository for French high school students to assist them in finding STEM resources.
- Stay tuned for more projects!
