A message from Director Joseph F. Patrouch in light of the tragic events in Vienna

All of us at the Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies are shocked and dismayed by the horrible terrorist attacks and murders last night in Vienna. Our thoughts, sympathy, and prayers are with the victims, their families, and friends. We wish all the wounded a speedy recovery.
 
As Federal President Van der Bellen said in his statement to the country:  "we will not allow ourselves to be infected by this hate." The Wirth Institute stands in solidarity with all those that defend tolerance and condemn hate, in Austria, in Europe, here in Canada, and around the world.
 
Out of respect for and in memory of the victims, the Wirth Institute will recognize the official three days of mourning declared today by the Austrian government.
