The Wirth Institute for Austrian and Central European Studies is pleased to announce the call for the next Austrian Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta. Pursuant to Article 9 of the Memorandum of Understanding between the University of Alberta and the Federal Ministry for Education, Science and Research of the Republic of Austria, the details of the call are as follows:

We invite applicants from any of the fields covered by the University of Alberta Faculty of Arts (Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine/Performing Arts). Applicants should consult the list of our research areas and academic programs and state clearly which of these areas best align with their own research.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research will provide appropriate funding to enable the appointment of a visiting assistant or associate professor. The Austrian Visiting Professor will become a full member of a Faculty of Arts department, as designated by the Dean. The appointment shall be for an initial term of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal for up to an additional 3 years. Any reappointment shall be based on the recommendation of the hosting department chair and subject to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada approval. The tasks of this assistant or associate professor are:

1. Teaching: courses taught will be determined as per Faculty of Arts teaching load (four (4) hours of teaching per week) and will typically include:

1. undergraduate courses(s) on an Austrian and Central European subject appropriate to the academic specialization of the individual concerned;
2. graduate course(s) appropriate to the academic specialization of the individual concerned established in one or more of the three divisions of the Faculty of Arts:

• Fine Arts
• Social Sciences
• Humanities

1. Service: Providing scholarly and organizational input for the preparation of Wirth Institute events such as symposia, conferences, etc.
2. Research: Engaging in research and research dissemination appropriate to the individual’s specialization and status as an assistant or associate professor.

The Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research will either transfer the funds for the costs associated with this assistant or associate professor annually, upon being invoiced by the University of Alberta as the assistant or associate professor’s employer, or pay the salary directly to the candidate.

The Faculty of Arts offers some of the most diverse undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Canada, with over 320 full-time professors across 15 departments and numerous interdisciplinary programs, including Criminology, Economics, Drama and English and Film Studies. With over 900 distinct courses in the humanities, social sciences and fine arts, you will engage with world-class researchers in Edmonton and from around the world in the discovery and advancement of human knowledge.

Candidates are invited to list their priority teaching interests and must include a minimum of 4 course proposals with their applications, one of which should be an introductory course with a focus on the culture and civilization of Austria. Courses at UAlberta are taught in English with some exceptions. In the case of langue or literature courses, preferred language of instruction needs to be listed in the course proposal as well.

Complete applications should be forwarded electronically to wirth.institute@ualberta.ca no later than Friday, January 1st, 2021. Final decisions are expected to be made by late January with a proposed start date of August 15^th, 2021 (the first day of classes at UAlberta will be on or about September 1^st).
