The Wirth Institute is happy to announce that the competition for this year's Johann Strauss Music Award is now open!
Open to students with satisfactory academic standing in an official Music Program at any Alberta post-secondary institution who are planning to study music in Austria, this award is given to support expenses (travel, accommodation, tuition/registration fees) incurred during their study abroad. In the absence of qualified registered student candidates, the award may be given to an advanced musician, post-doctoral fellow or junior music instructor wishing to advance their music skills through the study of music in Austria. Selection will be based on musical merit as demonstrated in an audition and interview.
Auditions: Finalists will be invited to auditions held at the University of Alberta the evening of January 16th at Convocation Hall. The audition includes up to fifteen minutes of musical performance and a brief interview of up to ten minutes. We ask that performers be prepared to perform repertoire that demonstrates three contrasting styles or genres, and for singers, three different languages. Composers and musicologists should contact the Coordinator to determine an equivalent demonstration of accomplishment (e.g. papers, compositions). It is the responsibility of auditionees to provide an accompanist if required. Applicants selected for an audition will be notified of their audition date and time.
