Renovation
The University of Alberta is initiating a project to replace the building envelope of the Universiade Pavilion, commonly known as the Butterdome.
The renewal will transform the facility to be more energy efficient and resilient, while addressing issues of leaking and rust and eliminate the risk of falling snow and ice during the winter.
This renovation advances our work to be and remain sustainable, while ensuring the facility continues to provide access to athletics, recreation, events and activities for our people and serve as a valuable public asset into the future.
Project phases
-
Phase 1 - Investigation and Strategy (September-December, 2024)
-
Phase 2 - Design and consultation (January-May, 2025)
-
Phase 3 - Final design, material procurement, early construction (June-December, 2025)
-
Phase 4 - Main construction period (January 2026-Fall 2027) with possible building closure from March-December, 2026
Consultation
We know a renovation like this impacts many users and interest holders. As part of our approach, we’re committed to fostering collaboration and transparency through collaborative planning, clear communication and empowered engagement.
Students and staff can sign up to be notified when consultation opportunities are open for registration.
Answers to frequently asked questions
Will the building still be yellow?
The final design and materials will consider product availability and performance and be determined after consultation with students and staff. While we aim to retain and enhance appropriate elements of the original design, our focus on making the building resilient into the future will transform its facade.
Why can’t you just replace the exterior panels?
Sustainability is a core value of the university. Replacing the porcelain enameled steel panels will not address energy efficiency, nor will it address issues of leaking, rust and falling snow/ice caused by the current design.
How can I give feedback on the design?
Consultation opportunities for students and staff will be held in spring 2025. Sign up to be notified when they are open for registration.
An online opportunity for feedback from residents of the surrounding community will be available in the future.
I use the facility for sports and recreation. How will I be affected?
We hope to keep the facility open for sports and recreation whenever possible, however there will be a period when the building is closed for construction. We will provide notice of any closures and suggestions on alternate facilities within the facility.
I use the facility to host events. What should I be aware of?
We hope to maintain access to the facility for events and activities whenever possible, however there will be a period when the building is closed for construction. All affected and potential clients will be engaged in the forthcoming planning phases. To find out if your booking is affected, contact bookings@ualberta.ca.
