The Division of Plastic Surgery Offers Three Types of Fellowships

 

1. Fellowship in Hand, Wrist and Peripheral Nerve Surgery

The University of Alberta hand, wrist and peripheral nerve surgery fellowship program is designed to provide comprehensive training in surgery of the hand and upper extremity. The fellow will become proficient in all aspects of hand and wrist surgery, peripheral nerve surgery and microsurgery of the upper limb. Spanning two tertiary and three community sites, this is a high-volume fellowship with a good balance of trauma and elective procedures. The fellowship offers experience with acute hand/wrist trauma, replantation, wrist arthroscopy, hand and wrist arthroplasty, nerve injury (including brachial plexus injuries), nerve reconstruction (including nerve transfer, target muscle reinnervation, and free functioning muscle transfer) and secondary reconstructive procedures of the upper extremity. The fellowship is administered through the Division of Plastic Surgery with rotations in shoulder and elbow incorporated through the Division of Orthopedics depending on fellow clinical goals.

Academic

Academic activities will include a formal didactic curriculum, case conferences, hand/nerve journal club, cadaveric anatomic dissections and a formal microsurgery animal training course. The fellow will also be expected to be actively involved in resident education both through didactic and clinical teaching.

Research

Fellows will be expected to complete one research program under the guidance of one of the supervisors.

The successful fellow would be expected to present their research at a national or international conference.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should meet the following requirements:

- Must be eligible for a license to practice medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA)

- Must be in the process of completing or have completed an accredited residency program with the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada or equivalent

- If the applicant has completed medical school or post-secondary training outside of an English speaking country, they will be required to complete their International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and submit the scores with the application

2. Fellowship in Acute Burn Care and Microvascular Reconstruction (Adult and
Pediatric), University of Alberta Firefighters’ Burn and Wound Treatment Unit

1-2 per year, depending on duration

6 months to 2 years, with potential starting dates of January 1st, April 1st, July 1st or
October 1st.

The University of Alberta Burn Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive training
in the medical and surgical treatment of acute burns as well as their sequelae. Fellows
will be part of a multi-disciplinary team and will become proficient in managing adult and
pediatric burns, frostbite, exfoliative disorders, burn reconstruction including
microsurgery, and the use of skin substitutes. Burn patients referred from Alberta,
northern British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Yukon, the Northwest Territories
or Nunavut are seen at Firefighters’ Burn and Wound Treatment Unit and can be treated
as inpatients or outpatients, including with critical care and ventilatory support. Surgical
care is provided acutely to achieve wound closure, as well as part of scar reconstruction
and rehabilitation. The fellowship is administered through the Division of Plastic Surgery
with teaching overlap by the Department of Critical Care depending on fellow clinical
goals. 
ABA verified since 2019, the Firefighters’ Burn and Wound Treatment Unit opened in
March 2000 and features eleven combined intensive care and rehabilitative beds, onsite
occupational therapy and physiotherapy facility, and new outpatient wound care clinic.
The Burn Unit is located adjacent to the Adult ICU, Pediatric ICU and the 15-theatre
operating room facilities. 
Associated facilities at the University of Alberta include a 30-bed plastic surgery ward, a
Skin Bank, the Plastic Surgery Wound Healing Research Laboratory (fully equipped
with molecular biology equipment, animal operating room and housing facility), and the
TRACS database system.

Academic

Rounds, Plastic Surgery journal club, cadaveric anatomic dissections and a formal
microsurgery animal training course. The fellow will also be expected to be actively
involved in resident and medical student education both through didactic and clinical
teaching.

Research
Fellows will be encouraged to participate in clinical and/or basic science research
projects. The successful fellow would be expected to present their research at a
national or international conference.
