Fellowship
Overview
The Division of Cardiac Surgery offers fellowship training programs in three cardiac sub-specialty areas: Adult Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Transplant/Mechanical Circulatory Support. These fellowships have an appointment of 12 months (starting July 1 and ending June 30) with the possibility of a 2nd year renewal depending on a fellow's career goals.
Educational Objectives
The goal of the fellowship is to provide a comprehensive, multidisciplinary training to individuals committed to a career in adult cardiac surgery. The fellowship training will provide a broad exposure to the full range of clinical problems encountered in a tertiary full-volume cardiac surgery practice in the areas of Adult Cardiac Surgery, Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Cardiothoracic Transplant/Mechanical Circulatory Support.
Fundamental Components of Fellowships
The Adult Cardiac Surgery fellows are assigned to work with 2 primary surgeons during their fellowship year.
Depending on the number of fellows and residents on service, both fellows and residents may be required to cover more than one service.
Fellows at times will be expected to work with surgeons other than their assigned surgeon.
Fellows are expected to participate in the pre-operative evaluation, peri-operative care and post operative care of a minimum of 200 cardiac surgical cases.
Fellows can expect to be in the operating room on average 2-4 days/week.
Fellows will be expected to attend the Pre-Anesthetic Clinic (PAC) where they will see pre-operative patients, perform history and physical exams, and counsel patients.
Call duties are dependent on the number of fellows and residents on service and can range from 1:4 to 1:7. Call coverage is in-house.
Coordination with other services is expected in the care and management of cardiac surgical patients.
Fellows are expected to be involved in cardiac surgery conferences, academic half days, wet labs and journal clubs.
Fellows are expected to be involved in at least one research project, which is coordinated through the Cardiac Surgery Research Office.
A fellowship certificate will be granted by the University of Alberta upon successful completion of the fellowship that the fellow was registered.
Fellows are expected to start their fellowship with a minimum surgical competency consistent with successful completion of a residency in cardiac surgery.
Fellows will be expected to work closely with our Cardiac Surgery Residents.
Fellows are expected to round daily on the inpatient surgery, or ensure that appropriate arrangements are made with another fellow or resident.
Funding
There are a few different funding models and if fellows are not self-funded, they will be paid by Medical Affairs (Alberta Health Services) an annual salary of approximately $79, 000.00 plus benefits.
