Men's Residence FAQs
- Are women allowed in the rooms to visit? Can they stay overnight?
Women are allowed to visit within prescribed hours and not overnight. In order to access the residence areas, a resident must accompany them, and they must sign in when they arrive (after 10pm) and sign out when they leave.
- Do I have to be Catholic to live at SJC?
No. However, most residents are Catholic.
- Do I have to take classes at SJC while living there?
No; however, SJC offers a wide range of courses that can serve as electives in most degree programs. Check out SJC's courses.
- Do residents have their own room?
Yes; all SJC men's residence rooms are single occupancy. Each floor has two community washrooms.
- Do the residences get together for social events?
The residences organize a variety of social events throughout the year.
- Do you have to attend church?
No; however, those wishing to attend church services are more then welcome to do so. There are two chapels available to students and the general public: Kateri Chapel (off the lobby of the Women's residence) and St. Joseph's Chapel (west wing of the main building).
- Do you offer student parking?
No; however, students can purchase parking passes on campus through University of Alberta Parking Services.
- Does SJC provide laundry services?
The St. Joseph's College Men's Residence has a laundry room on 2nd floor of the main building.
- Does the mens residence offer communal spaces
The 4th floor of the residence is the social lounge. The 3rd floor center lounge serves as a study lounge and board game space. SJC is home to a 2-storey NEOS affiliated library and a large student lounge on the main floor for study space.
- How are the rooms furnished?
Each room has a twin bed, desk, dresser, and closet space. Some rooms have sinks and/or bathrooms and are larger in size, but are generally reserved for returning students.
- How long is the lease?
The Men's Residence offers 8-month or 12-month leases.
- Is the residence involved in campus sports?
The Men's Residence has won the U.A.B. Cup as the top intramural unit in the Campus Recreation Men's "A" Conference for the last 30 years. All residents can participate in up to 24 different activities throughout the year. There are usually competitive and fun teams in each sport.
- Is there a meal plan?
Yes. All male residents are included in a full meal plan that includes a buffet-style all-you-can-eat lunch and dinner with a continental breakfast.
- Is there free Wi-Fi?
Free University Wireless Services (UWS) Wi-Fi is available to all residents.
- What should I bring when I move in?
SJC is home to a 2-storey NEOS affiliated library and a large student lounge on the main floor for study space.
